How to Rotate PDF Pages Permanently (Free)

Fix sideways or upside-down PDF pages — apply rotation to all, odd, even or specific pages. The complete free guide.

Scanned a document sideways? Got a PDF where every other page is upside down because the scanner flipped duplex pages? Rotating PDFs permanently fixes orientation issues — and unlike rotating in a viewer (which doesn't save), this writes the new rotation into the file itself.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Open the Rotate PDF tool.
  2. 2Upload your PDF.
  3. 3Pick rotation: 90° (clockwise), 180° (upside down), or 270° (counter-clockwise).
  4. 4Pick scope: All pages, Odd pages, Even pages, or a custom list like 1,3-5.
  5. 5Click Rotate PDF and download.

Common scenarios

  • Duplex scan with flipped backs — rotate Even pages 180°.
  • Whole document scanned landscape but should be portrait — rotate All pages 90° (or 270°, depending on which way).
  • Just one page is sideways — use Custom and enter that page number.

Why permanent rotation matters

Rotating inside a PDF viewer (Preview, Chrome, Adobe Reader) only affects what you see — close and reopen and it's back. Recipients still see the wrong orientation. Permanent rotation writes the new angle into the file, so it appears correctly everywhere, including printers.

Why rotation in a PDF viewer doesn't stick

When you press the rotate button in Preview, Chrome or Adobe Reader, you're only changing the view transform — the underlying file is unchanged. Close the viewer and the rotation is gone. Recipients you forward the file to see the original (wrong) orientation, and printers print the original orientation. Permanent rotation writes a new rotation value onto each page's metadata, so every viewer and every printer respects it from then on.

Common scanner artefacts to fix

  • Duplex (two-sided) scanners often flip every even page 180° because the back side feeds upside-down. Rotate Even pages 180° in one pass to fix the entire document.
  • Single-page sheet feeders sometimes land the page sideways depending on the orientation guide. Rotate All pages 90° clockwise (or 270° if it went the other way) until text reads left-to-right.
  • Phone-scanner apps occasionally write the wrong EXIF orientation tag. Rotation in the PDF fixes the visible output even when the source metadata is wrong.

Doesn't this hurt OCR or searchable text?

No. Rotation only updates the page's display metadata — the embedded text layer is unaffected. If your PDF was OCR'd (Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY, our PDF to Text tool), the text still maps to the same characters on the page. After rotation, searching, copying and screen reading all continue to work normally.

Batch rotation rules that save real time

If you scan a lot of multi-page documents, learn the four rules that cover 95% of cases: rotate all 90° clockwise (landscape scanned as portrait), rotate all 90° counter-clockwise (the other way), rotate even pages 180° (duplex back-side flip), and rotate odd pages 180° (rare — happens when the front-side feed is upside-down). Memorising these four removes the trial-and-error step entirely.

For mixed batches — some pages portrait, some landscape — rotate by page range instead of by parity. The Rotate PDF tool lets you select specific page numbers or ranges, so you can fix a single misrotated page without touching the rest of the document or splitting the file.

A practical workflow if you scan dozens of documents a week: scan first, rotate in one final batch pass at the end of the day rather than fixing each file as it lands. Batch rotation in a single tool session is roughly five times faster than opening and saving each PDF individually, and you can verify orientation across the whole stack with a thumbnail preview before committing the change.

FAQ

Does rotation lose quality?
No. Rotation only updates a metadata flag on each page — pixel content is untouched.
Can I rotate different pages by different amounts?
Run the tool multiple times — once per rotation angle, with the corresponding page list.
Will it work on encrypted PDFs?
Unlock with our Unlock PDF tool first, then rotate.
