How PDF → Word conversion works
A native PDF (one generated from Word, Google Docs or InDesign) has selectable text and structural data. Converting it to .docx is essentially a re-layout: each text run, font and image is mapped back to a Word equivalent.
A scanned PDF (an image of a page) has no text data. The converter runs OCR first — recognizing characters from pixels — and then formats the recognized text into a Word document.

When PDF-to-Word actually works well
PDFs were designed to look the same everywhere — they freeze layout, fonts and images into fixed positions. Word documents are the opposite: text reflows, fonts substitute, images anchor to paragraphs. Converting between them is always a lossy translation. Conversions work cleanly when the source PDF was originally exported from Word (the structural information survives the round trip), when fonts are common (Arial, Times, Calibri), and when the layout is single-column body text with a few headings.
Conversions struggle with multi-column magazines, heavy tables, embedded forms, scanned pages without OCR, and any document where small visual details (page breaks, exact spacing, footnote positions) matter. For those, edit the PDF directly with a dedicated PDF editor instead.
Editing workflow after conversion
- Open the converted DOCX in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. Run a quick visual diff — scroll alongside the original PDF in another window.
- Re-apply heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2) using Word's Styles pane so the document outline is correct for navigation and accessibility.
- Replace any text-converted images with the original raster images for sharper output.
- If tables came across as text boxes, retype them as native Word tables — the file becomes much smaller and editable cells return.
- Export back to PDF when finished; the new PDF will be properly tagged for screen readers if you used Word's styles.
Privacy when the document is sensitive
Contracts, payslips, medical letters and legal filings are the most common things people convert to Word — and the most sensitive to upload to a random web tool. The converter runs in your browser whenever the source PDF allows it (text-based PDFs), so the file never reaches our servers. Scanned PDFs that require OCR are the one exception and need explicit user consent before any upload.
